Design roles explained

System Designer

A System Designer is responsible for creating the core mechanics and systems that define how a game is played, such as combat, progression, or resource management systems.

As a System Designer, you’ll work with the development team to design and balance gameplay systems that align with the game’s vision. You’ll create rule sets, tweak variables, and ensure that the systems are fun, fair, and engaging for players. You may also work on areas like player progression, in-game economies, or combat mechanics, depending on the type of game.

Many System Designers have backgrounds in game design or mathematics, though practical experience designing game systems and a strong portfolio are crucial.

For this role, you should be passionate about game mechanics, enjoy problem-solving, and be comfortable working with complex systems. You’ll need to think critically about balance, progression, and player motivation.

Your portfolio should include examples of systems you’ve designed for games, demonstrating your ability to create engaging and well-balanced gameplay mechanics.
