3D Modelling Artist

The 3D Modelling Artist, or simply 3D Artist, uses software to create models of characters, objects and any other structures within a game.

In this role, you take the 2D concept art or a brief from the senior creatives and bring the ideas to life in three dimensions. In smaller studios, that could mean modelling characters, buildings, vehicles, rocks - anything the game needs.

In larger studios, you’ll be focused on a particular area of the game, perhaps specialising as a character artist or an environment artist.

Most people working in 3D Modelling have a degree. Above all, you should be someone that enjoys drawing, has lots of patience and can get lost for hours in their work.

As a professional, you’ll be using a range of tools including Zbrush, Blender and Maya. We recommend you go to our tool picker to help you choose the right one for your current level.

Working in the games industry is highly competitive and you’ll need to make sure your portfolio (a collection of your best work) stands out to employers and course leaders.

As a 3D modeller, your portfolio should show a range of art styles and techniques, observational figure & environment drawing, experience of using software, and examples of your design process from sketchbook concept to final 3D object. In your final portfolio, you should try to avoid much manga/anime work and do not copy work from others.

Once you have a portfolio, you should showcase it on platforms like Behance, ArtStation or through your own website. For more ideas, see our top tips on building your portfolio.

Whatever role you are working in, it is essential that you understand the game making process. Head to our build-a-game section, start modding other games or join a game jam to build up your skills and network.
