Art roles explained
Concept Artist
A Concept Artist is responsible for designing the initial look and feel of a game’s characters, environments, and other visual elements. Their sketches and illustrations help establish the artistic direction that will guide the rest of the development team.
As a Concept Artist, you’ll work closely with art directors, designers, and 3D modelers to create concept art that aligns with the game's vision. Whether designing a futuristic city or a unique creature, your work will be used as a blueprint for the final game assets. You’ll use tools like Photoshop or Procreate to create detailed illustrations that bring ideas to life.
Many Concept Artists have a degree in fine arts, illustration, or game design, but a standout portfolio is crucial. Your portfolio should show a wide range of styles and ideas, demonstrating your ability to think creatively and communicate visually.
For this job, you need to be passionate about design, love drawing, and have a strong imagination. You’ll need to take rough ideas and turn them into polished concepts that inspire the rest of the team.
Because competition is tough, your portfolio should include a range of work, from characters to environments, and show off your creative vision and technical skill.
