Art roles explained
Creative Director
A Creative Director shapes the overall vision for a game, guiding its artistic, narrative, and design elements to create a cohesive and compelling experience for players.
As a Creative Director, you’ll oversee teams across disciplines—artists, designers, writers, and programmers—to ensure that every aspect of the game supports the creative vision. You’ll make high-level decisions about the game's tone, style, gameplay mechanics, and storytelling, working closely with department leads to keep the project aligned with the game’s goals.
Many Creative Directors have extensive experience in game design, art direction, or writing, with years of experience leading teams and managing complex projects. A degree in game design, art, or a related field can be helpful, but the most important factor is a portfolio that showcases your ability to lead a project from concept to completion.
For this job, you should be someone with a strong sense of creativity, leadership skills, and the ability to communicate a clear vision to diverse teams. You’ll need to balance creative ambition with technical constraints to deliver a successful game.
This is a senior role, and competition is fierce. Your portfolio should include examples of projects where you have driven the creative direction and led teams to successful outcomes.
