Design roles explained
Design Manager
A Design Manager ensures that the game design process runs smoothly and efficiently, managing a team of designers and overseeing the creation of the game’s core mechanics and systems.
As a Design Manager, you’ll work closely with the creative director and design team to ensure that the game’s mechanics, levels, and features are designed according to the project’s vision. You’ll also manage schedules, resources, and workflows to make sure the design team hits its milestones and delivers high-quality work.
Many Design Managers have experience as game designers and have worked their way up through the ranks. A degree in game design, project management, or a related field is helpful, but proven leadership and organisational skills are more important.
For this role, you should be passionate about both game design and project management. You’ll need to balance creativity with structure, making sure the design team stays on track while fostering a collaborative and innovative environment.
Competition for design management roles is high, so a portfolio showcasing your ability to manage complex projects and lead teams is essential.
