Design roles explained
Economy Designer
An Economy Designer creates the in-game systems that define how players earn, spend, and manage resources, balancing in-game economies to ensure fairness and engagement.
As an Economy Designer, you’ll be responsible for designing the systems behind virtual currencies, rewards, progression, and monetisation. Your job is to ensure that the in-game economy is balanced and motivates players to engage with the game, without making progression feel too easy or too frustrating.
Many Economy Designers have a background in game design, data analysis, or economics, with degrees in game design, economics, or mathematics being useful. You’ll need to have strong analytical skills, an understanding of player psychology, and experience working with game data to make informed design decisions.
For this job, you should be someone who loves games and enjoys solving complex problems. You’ll need a strong grasp of maths, systems thinking, and player motivations to create engaging, balanced in-game economies.
Working in the games industry is competitive, and your portfolio should showcase examples of economies you’ve designed, including systems for resource management, progression, and monetisation.
