Art roles explained
Environment Artist
An Environment Artist creates immersive worlds where players explore and interact, bringing landscapes, buildings, and other environmental elements to life.
As an Environment Artist, you’ll design and model environments that fit the game’s art style and narrative, from lush forests and futuristic cities to dungeons and alien landscapes. You’ll work closely with level designers and technical artists to ensure that the environments not only look great but also function within the game’s mechanics and performance requirements.
Many environmental artists have a degree in art, game design, or 3D modelling, but a strong portfolio is key to landing a job. You’ll need to demonstrate proficiency in tools like Maya, Blender, and Substance Painter, as well as showcase your ability to create textures, lighting, and atmospheres that enhance the player experience.
For this role, you should be someone who loves world-building, has a strong eye for detail, and enjoys creating immersive environments that transport players into the game world.
Since the industry is competitive, your portfolio should showcase a variety of environments, demonstrating your ability to work across different styles and genres.
