Design roles explained
Game Balance Designer
A Game Balance Designer ensures that the mechanics, progression systems, and multiplayer elements of a game are fair, challenging, and enjoyable for all players.
As a Game Balance Designer, you’ll focus on adjusting variables such as character abilities, in-game economies, and enemy difficulty to ensure the game feels fair and rewarding. You’ll run simulations, playtests, and analyse player feedback to make informed adjustments to the game’s systems.
Many Game Balance Designers have backgrounds in game design or mathematics, with a strong understanding of gameplay mechanics and player psychology.
For this role, you should enjoy problem-solving, working with numbers, and ensuring that gameplay systems are balanced for different player types. You’ll need strong analytical skills and an understanding of game mechanics.
Your portfolio should include examples of games or systems you’ve balanced, showcasing your ability to adjust gameplay elements to create a fair and engaging experience.
