Animation roles explained
2D Animator
A 2D Animator brings characters, environments, and objects to life in a game by creating smooth, engaging animations.
In 2D games, the animator’s work is critical in creating fluid character movements, detailed cutscenes, and eye-catching visual effects. Whether it’s a character running, jumping, or interacting with the world, it's the animator's job to ensure these actions feel natural and expressive.
As a 2D Animator, you’ll collaborate closely with artists, designers, and programmers to ensure that your animations integrate smoothly into the game. This requires an understanding of timing, movement, and the tools used for 2D animation, such as Adobe Animate, Toon Boom, or Spine.
Many 2D Animators have a degree or diploma in animation or a related field, but just as importantly, you'll need a strong portfolio that demonstrates your range of animation skills. Above all, your portfolio should show off your creativity, attention to detail, and ability to bring characters and worlds to life.
For this job, it helps if you're someone who enjoys drawing, has a keen eye for detail, and loves storytelling through movement. Your work will help make the gameplay more immersive and enjoyable for players.
Working in the games industry is competitive, so ensure your portfolio stands out with a variety of animation styles, scenes, and character actions.
