Design roles explained

Monetisation Designer

A Monetisation Designer is responsible for designing the in-game systems that drive revenue, particularly in free-to-play or live-service games.

As a Monetisation Designer, you’ll design in-game economies, rewards, and virtual goods that players can purchase. You’ll ensure these systems are balanced, ethical, and enhance the player experience without negatively impacting gameplay. You’ll work closely with designers and data analysts to fine-tune in-game purchases, subscriptions, and seasonal content to maximise engagement and revenue.

Many Monetisation Designers have backgrounds in game design, data analysis, or economics, and experience working on free-to-play games is highly valued.

For this role, you should be someone who enjoys analysing data, understanding player behaviour, and designing systems that are both profitable and player-friendly.

Your portfolio should include examples of in-game economies or monetisation systems you’ve designed, with data showing the impact on player engagement and revenue.
