Design roles explained

Narrative Designer

A Narrative Designer is responsible for crafting the storylines, dialogue, and narrative elements of a game, ensuring that the storytelling fits seamlessly with the gameplay.

As a Narrative Designer, you’ll collaborate with writers, designers, and artists to create a compelling narrative that enhances the player's experience. You’ll work on character development, plot progression, dialogue writing, and integrating story elements with game mechanics, ensuring that the story feels interactive and immersive. You may also design branching story paths and narrative choices that affect gameplay.

Many Narrative Designers have degrees in creative writing, game design, or literature, but storytelling experience and a strong portfolio are essential. You’ll need to be able to write compelling dialogue and plot points that engage players emotionally.

For this role, you should have a passion for storytelling, enjoy collaborating with designers, and understand how to weave narrative into interactive experiences. Strong communication and creative problem-solving skills are crucial.

Your portfolio should showcase examples of your narrative work, including story outlines, dialogue, or games you’ve worked on, highlighting your storytelling ability.
