Technical Artist
A Technical Artist works as a link between the art and programming teams, ensuring that the game’s visual assets are optimised and function well within the game engine.
As a Technical Artist, you’ll develop tools, scripts, and workflows that allow artists to create high-quality assets without compromising performance. You’ll focus on areas like shaders, lighting, and optimisation to ensure that the game looks great while running smoothly on different platforms. You’ll also troubleshoot technical issues that arise during the production process.
Many technical artists have degrees in computer science, game development, or digital art, and they have strong programming skills and an understanding of art tools like Maya, Houdini, or Substance Painter.
For this role, you should be someone who enjoys problem-solving, has a strong understanding of both art and technology and can create solutions that help the art team work efficiently within the game engine.
Your portfolio should include examples of technical tools, shaders, or optimisation work you’ve developed, demonstrating your ability to balance visual quality with performance.
