Audio roles explained
Composer
A Composer creates the music and soundtracks that set the mood and atmosphere in a game. From epic battle themes to quiet, emotional moments, the composer’s work defines how the game feels.
As a Composer, you’ll work closely with the game’s designers and directors to understand the vision of the game and how the music can enhance the experience. You’ll create original compositions, using digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Logic Pro or Ableton Live to produce and arrange your music. Depending on the project, you might also collaborate with sound designers and audio engineers to ensure the soundtrack blends seamlessly with the sound effects.
Many Composers have degrees in music composition, sound design, or audio production, but just as important is your demo reel—a portfolio that showcases your ability to create diverse, high-quality music that fits a variety of game styles and moods.
For this job, you should have a deep love of music and a good understanding of how it can affect emotions. You’ll need technical expertise in composition and production, and a creative approach to making music that resonates with players.
Working in the games industry is competitive, and your demo reel is key to landing a job. Include a range of compositions that demonstrate your versatility, from atmospheric tracks to high-energy themes.
