Audio roles explained
Sound Designer
A Sound Designer creates the audio elements in a game, including sound effects, ambient sounds, and sometimes the integration of voiceovers, ensuring that audio complements the gameplay experience.
As a Sound Designer, you’ll work closely with the development team to design and implement sounds that match the game’s aesthetic and enhance the player’s immersion. You’ll create, record, or manipulate sounds using digital audio workstations (DAWs) and sound libraries, ensuring that audio plays seamlessly with the game’s actions and environments.
Many Sound Designers have degrees in audio engineering, sound design, or music production, though experience in the industry and a strong portfolio of previous sound work are crucial.
For this role, you should be passionate about sound, have strong technical skills in sound creation and mixing, and understand how audio can shape the player’s experience. Attention to detail and creativity are key.
Your portfolio should showcase a variety of sound design projects, including examples of your work in interactive media, to demonstrate your versatility and technical expertise.
