Creative Commons

Creative Commons licenses enable the free distribution of an otherwise copyrighted piece of work, like a painting or soundtrack. If a creator releases their work under a Creative Commons license they give you the right to share, use, or build upon a work that they have created; there are different types of licenses so be sure to check whether you have the permission you need, especially if you’re making a commercial game. The license looks something like ’CC BY-SA 4.0’ and you can usually click on that to find out what it means.

You can search for works with Creative Commons licenses on a number of sites, including the Creative Commons website, Wikimedia Commons, and Flickr Commons.

  • Get the tool here and search for Creative Commons assets to use in your game.
  • Find out more about how Creative Commons licences work.
